SATRC WG PRS Meeting Held Successfully in Pakistan
The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), successfully convened the Meeting of the SATRC Working Group on Policy, Regulation and Services (WG PRS) from 1 to 2 July 2026 in Islamabad, Pakistan.
The meeting opened with welcoming remarks by Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar, Member (Compliance & Enforcement), PTA and Chair of the SATRC WG PRS, followed by remarks from Maj. Gen. (R) Hafeez ur Rehman, Chairman of PTA.
A total of 71 delegates participated, representing 9 SATRC Members, 5 APT Affiliate Members, and 2 international organizations, reaffirming the region's commitment to strengthening cooperation on telecommunications policy and regulation.
The meeting was held under the SATRC Action Plan Phase X (SAP-X) 2026–2027, approved during the 26th Meeting of the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators' Council (SATRC-26) in Islamabad in November 2025.
In line with SAP-X, participants reviewed and discussed the Working Group's assigned priorities, focusing on key regional policy and regulatory issues, including:
- Work Item 1: Regulatory issues and harmonization of Internet of Things and Short-Range Devices
- Work Item 2: SATRC G5 readiness assessment: Benchmarking, policy, prioritization and development of a regional roadmap for SATRC members aligned to ITU G5 indicators
- Work Item 3: A comparative study on how Tariff Structure are designed by Telecommunication Operators in SATRC Countries and identifying the parameters that impact irregular tariff fluctuations
The meeting achieved several important milestones, including the appointment of Lead and Co-Lead Experts for each Work Item, the finalization and adoption of the corresponding questionnaires, and the approval of the Working Group's implementation plan.
The next meeting of the SATRC WG PRS is scheduled to take place in Maldives during the third quarter (Q3) of 2027.
