APT Convenes AWG-36 in Brunei Darussalam with Key Outcomes on Spectrum and Emerging Technologies
The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) successfully convened the 36th Meeting of the APT Wireless Group (AWG-36) from 6 to 10 April 2026 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, with 336 participants from APT Members, Associate Members, Affiliate Members, and International Organizations. The meeting was hosted by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI).
Chaired by Dr. Daejung Kim, AWG-36 was held over five days, featuring four parallel sessions and more than 50 meetings across Plenary, Working Groups, Sub-Working Groups, Task Groups, and the AFIS Ad-Hoc Group. The meeting reviewed progress on ongoing work items, considered new proposals, and the two workshops on IMT-2030/6G and emerging satellite technologies were also conducted during this meeting.
AWG-36 considered 80 input contributions and 14 information documents, and produced a range of key outputs including:
- APT Report on millimeter wave radar/sensor technologies for ITS in Asia Pacific region countries
- APT Report on usage of cooperative vehicle-infrastructure ITS
- APT Report on Wireless Power Transmission for moving machines
- APT Report on air-to-ground communication system based on IMT technologies in the Asia Pacific region
- Revised APT Report on mitigation measures to improve sharing and compatibility between 4G-LTE and 5G-NR systems and other systems operating in portions of 3300 – 4200 MHz
- Revised APT Report on relevant information for considerations on the possible implementation of IMT in the frequency band 1 427–1 518 MHz
- Revised APT Report on trends and spectrum developments for IMT usage in 2025-2030 in Asia-Pacific region
- Revised APT Report on information of mobile operators’ frequencies, technologies and license durations in Asia Pacific countries
- Revised APT Report on implementing Public Safety LTE (PS-LTE) mobile broadband capability in Asia-Pacific region
- Revised APT Report on WAS/RLAN technology development and implementation aspects
- Questionnaire on potential use cases and technologies of High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) for IMT-2030/6G
- Questionnaire on spectrum usage for utility radiocommunication systems in Asia Pacific countries
- Questionnaire on trends and technical requirements for modern satellite applications
- Questionnaire on current and future usage of unmanned aircraft systems in Asia-Pacific region
AWG-36 elected Mr. Wang Hu (People’s Republic of China) and Mr. Yasuhiro Kato (Japan) as Vice-Chairs of AWG, while Mr. Bharat Bhatia (Republic of India) was appointed as Special Advisor to AWG. The meeting also appointed the Chairs of Working Groups of AWG as follows:
- Chair, WG-HAR: Ms. Ding Xianhua (People’s Republic of China)
- Chair, WG-IMT: Mr. Bui Ha Long (Socialist Republic of Viet Nam)
- Chair, WG-TER: Mr. Takahiko Yamazaki (Japan)
- Chair, WG-SAM: Ms. Geetha Remy Vincent (Malaysia)
The next meeting, AWG-37, is scheduled to be held from 7 to 11 September 2026 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
