In January 2020, there was no APT meeting under the APT Work Programme being held. However, APT hosted the 24th Meeting of the Regional Interagency Working Group on Information and Communication Technology (IWG-24) on 21 January 2020, at the APT Headquarters.

The Interagency Coordination Meeting on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was held at Bangkok on 22 August 2001. It was jointly organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) represented by the ITU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT), with the main objective of initiating the process of consultations, including exchange of experiences and information of international and regional organizations concerned with work of ICT in Asia and the Pacific. The meeting agreed to establish the Regional Interagency Working Group on Information and Communication Technology (IWG) to continue the cooperation on this activity. All concerned agencies and organizations dealing with ICT in the region would be invited to become members of the Working Group.

 

The objectives of IWG are to share activities of international organizations with ICT-related measures, discuss areas for cooperation, encourage coordination of activities with a view to promote optimum utilization of resources, promote partnerships projects, and complement each other's expertise for integrated development. Each year, ESCAP, APT and ITU take turns as hosts.

 

IWG-24 was attended by ESCAP, ITU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, APT, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Each organization shared its own priorities and plans for 2020, followed by a discussion on what would be possible areas/ activities for the collaboration.

 

The meeting agreed to cooperate in International Girls in ICT Day event, which would be on 23 April 2020.  ESCAP proposed to provide the venue for such event. Details on the arrangement of the event would be further discussed by these organizations and partners.

 

The meeting agree that IWG-25 will be hosted by ESCAP in the beginning of 2021.

The South Asian Telecommunication Regulators' Council (SATRC) Workshop on Recent Trends and Technologies

11 – 13 March 2020, Dhulikhel, Nepal

APT will organize the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators' Council (SATRC) Workshop on Recent Trends and Technologies from 11 to 13 March 2020 in Dhulikhel, Nepal. The workshop will be hosted by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA).

The SATRC Workshop on Recent Trends and Technologies is a part of the implementation of SATRC Action Plan Phase VII which was approved by the 19th Meeting of the SATRC held in 2018 in Islamabad, Pakistan. The emphasis of the workshop will be on recent trends and technologies for providing connectivity and encouraging innovation towards smart digital society. It will give an opportunity for the SATRC Members as well as industry to share their experiences and future plan to adopt the changes in trends and technologies.

The 26th Meeting of the APT Wireless Group (AWG-26)

20 - 24 April 2020, Bangkok, Thailand

APT will organize the 26th Meeting of the APT Wireless Group (AWG-26) from 20 to 24 April 2020 in Bangkok, Thailand. Such schedule was postponed from its original dates from 16 to 20 March 2020.

The work areas of the AWG include spectrum arrangement and harmonization, spectrum monitoring, spectrum sharing studies, future development of IMT and many other emerging wireless technologies. During AWG-26, the Working Groups of AWG will review the work progress on work items and develop outcomes based on decisions taken at the meeting.

The 1st Meeting of the Correspondence Group for the Strategic Plan of the APT for 2021-2023 (CGSP-1)

2 – 3 April 2020, Bangkok, Thailand

APT will organize the 1st Meeting of the Correspondence Group for the Strategic Plan of the APT for 2021-2023 (CGSP-1) from 2 to3 April 2020 at the APT Headquarters, Bangkok, Thailand.

The objectives of CGSP-1 are to:

- discuss initial draft with inputs from CGSP members;

- review work plan of the Group; and

- develop the 1st draft of the Strategic Plan of the APT for 2021-2023.
