The 23rd Meeting of APT
Wireless Group (AWG-23) was held from 9 to 13 April 2018 in Da Nang City,
Viet Nam. The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communications
(MIC), Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
The meeting was attended by 191
participants from APT Members, Associate Members, Affiliate Members,
International/Regional Organizations and other organizations. H.E. Mr. Pham
Hong Hai, Vice Minister, Ministry of Information and Communications,
Socialist Republic of Viet Nam graced the meeting and delivered the inaugural
address.
During AWG-23, the Working
Groups, Sub-Working Groups and Task Groups met several times to discuss the
work progress on various work items. The work items are related to various work areas including
spectrum arrangement and harmonization; spectrum monitoring; spectrum
sharing studies; future development of IMT; fixed wireless systems;
intelligent transport system; wireless power transmission; modern satellite
systems; aeronautical and maritime; PPDR and railway radiocommunication.
In addition, the meeting
created two Ad hoc Groups to discuss the subject of High Altitude Platform
Systems (HAPS) and issue related to the adoption of Draft APT
Recommendation. The Ad hoc group on HAPS considered a number of proposals
including the formation of a new Task Group on HAPS (TG HAPS) and developed
a questionnaire to study the situation of HAPS in Asia-Pacific countries.
While the questionnaire was approved by the meeting, the Ad hoc group
decided to continue the discussion on the formation of the new TG HAPS at
next AWG meeting. The Ad hoc group on Recommendation suggested a number of
ways and enhanced communication mechanism to seek Members’ endorsements for
the Draft APT Recommendations.
The meeting considered over
hundred input documents and the outputs of the meeting were as follows:

Three new reports concerning the utilization of
spectrum and technical study on FWS link and two revised existing reports.
•
Revised Recommendation on Licensed Shared Access (LSA)
•
Four questionnaires relating to 5G, HAPS, Wireless
Power Transmission (WPT) and APT700 band
•
Two liaison documents to ITU-R working parties
AWG-23 decided to abandon the
Task Group on CRS/SDR. The terms of reference and work plan of the
Sub-Working Groups and Task Groups were updated accordingly.
The next AWG meeting will be
held from 17 to 21 September 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Condolence:
During AWG-23, Mr. Jan Färjh, Head of
Standards & Industry Initiatives, Ericsson Group Function Technology
and Emerging Business passed away on 12 April 2018 at the meeting venue. On
the same day during the morning Sub Working Group IMT, 5G mini workshop
session he presented on ‘5G Development and Industry Trends’. AWG delegates
were deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Mr. Jan Färjh. A message of
condolence was delivered by the Chairman of AWG and a minute of silence was
observed prior to the beginning of the final session of the Plenary to pay
tribute to his great contributions towards mobile industry revolution and
in memory of Mr. Jan Färjh.
AWG-23

who passed away on 12 April 2018.
